Actor Holiday PSA: Not everything is a business move. I repeat: Not everything is a business move.
Sometimes you need to do things because it shows you are a good person.
This is the time of year where gifts are given to our friends, our family, etc. We give these gifts because we care about these people and want to share joy with them and let them know they are important to us.
Gifts should not be given with the requirement of getting something in return.
Remember that when you give gifts to your agents, teachers, coaches, casting directors, directors, etc. Do not give a gift thinking it will book you something down the road. Even worse - don’t EVER imply that with the gift.
They are important to you because of who they are, not what they can do for you.
Ask yourself: If they weren’t a business contact next year, would I still send / give them this?
If the answer is no, then don’t do it.
Give the gift because you want to thank them. Give the gift because you value them in your life and you want to share that with them.
The same goes for holiday cards and thank you cards post auditions.
The same goes with interactions with industry members on social media.
Interact honestly - without motives. Say thank you in a card and honestly mean it. Don’t mention future auditions or callbacks. Send a holiday card with well wishes and mean it with out the hope of being considered for a role or letting them know about a project you’re working on. Comment on a post without sucking up or “networking.”
Yes. I said it. STOP NETWORKING! Meet people and connect with people because of who they are and your respect for them and what they do, not what they can do for you.
Connect, give, share because you care. Do these things because you mean them. Do these things because you are a genuine and good person.
Being a good person is the best business move of all.
